Coming Down the Home Stretch
69" x 57"
I decided to make a quilt of horses racing down a track. I had never made anything like this before so I thought I would try to make one. After many drawings and a lot of studying horses I made this quilt. The background scenery and the race track were made with commercial fabrics. I chenilled fabrics together to create the illusion of grass. The fencing was handpainted and appliqued onto the quilt. Then it was time to add the horses. I used a brown velour fabric and a black cotton fabric for the horses. They are heavily thread painted to create the texture that I was after. The jockeys faces and hands were painted.
This quilted wallhanging was juried in at the American Quilters Society in Paducah, Kentucky quilt show in April 2006. It was also shown at our local quilt show in July 2006 in Owensboro, Kentucky. This quilt was made in the fall and winter of 2005.
